Custom Made in Ear Hearing Aids
Custom in-ear hearing aids are suitable for mild to severe hearing loss.
There are five types of in-the-ear hearing aids offered in this category:
Full Shell & Half Shell (ITE):
ITE hearing aids sit comfortably in the visible part of your ear, with no wires or tubes to contend with. ITEs are usually easier to manage than smaller ITC instruments, as they are bigger and suitable for a larger range of hearing losses. ITE instruments often have a longer battery life, as they use a bigger battery and can be made with a program button and volume control for easy adjustments by the individual.
The Canal (ITC) & Completely in the Canal (CIC)
ITC and CIC hearing aids are built to sit further inside the ear canal, meaning they are less visible than the ITE device. They are suitable for mild to severe hearing loss. The ITC model can be made with volume control and program buttons, whereas the CIC, due to size, can only fit the program button.
Invisible in the Canal (IIC).
The IIC is the ultimate in discretion if you do not want anyone to know you wear a hearing aid. This style of hearing instrument sits deep in the ear canal, making them almost invisible.
All the in-the-ear hearing aids are custom-made to fit a person’s ear canal. They are easy to insert into the ear and can be beneficial if you wear glasses and hats, as they stay out of the way.
Receiver in the Canal Hearing Devices (RITE’s)
Suitable for all hearing losses from mild to profound
RITEs, also known as RICs, are smaller behind-the-ear hearing aids with the central part of the hearing aid behind the ear. There is an inconspicuous ultra-thin tube with a wire inside. This delivers the sound to the receiver in your ear with the help of a small dome or mould.
This style is very discrete due to the thin tube design and the small size of the hearing aid behind the ear. For someone with mild hearing loss, this hearing aid can be very beneficial in keeping the sound level comfortable by controlling the amount of natural sound entering your ear. This means you can enjoy a clearer and more natural sound quality.
They come in various colours, from subtle skin and hair tones to bold and trendy colours, making them very cosmetically appealing.
Standard Behind-the-ear (BTE)
(Suitable for mild to profound hearing losses)
This hearing aid can be as small as the open-fit BTE; however, if the hearing loss is severe, the hearing aid is usually larger. The main section of the hearing aid sits behind the ear, with a mould attached to the hearing aid via an ear hook and a thick tube. Due to the size of the hearing aid and mould, it usually suits people with dexterity issues or with a loss of feeling in their fingertips. The increased size also allows for more power and longer battery life.
Micro Open Fit Behind the Ear
Suitable for mild to severe hearing losses
This hearing aid is slightly bigger than the RITE hearing aid as the receiver is now in the main part of the hearing aid behind the ear. This hearing aid is still cosmetically appealing and virtually invisible as it uses a thin tube with a small dome or mould in the ear. This type of hearing aid is best suited for people with normal hearing in the low frequencies and hearing loss in the higher frequencies. This is common with noise-induced hearing loss but also age-related hearing loss.
The open-fit device allows you to naturally hear those sounds you usually hear and amplify only the sounds you need. This allows for a more natural sound and eliminates the blocked feeling that can happen with in-the-ear and standard behind-the-ear hearing aids with moulds. They come in various colours, from subtle skin and hair tones to bold and trendy colours, making them very cosmetically appealing.
